Covina

The city of Covina CA was formed in 1882 by Joseph Swift Phillips on a 2,000-acre parcel acquired from John Edward Hollenbeck, one of Rancho La Puente’s 1842 grantees. In 1875, Hollenbeck bought a failing coffee plantation from three Costa Rican brothers, Pedro Maria Badilla, Julian Badilla, and Pedro Antonio Badilla; the latter bought it from the descendants of Hollenbeck’s co-grantee John A. Rowland, who had purchased it in 1842.
